Will mobiles kill the PC?

Due to the increasing role that internet technology has in mobile phones, the product could soon be as popular as PCs and laptops, Motorola’s chief executive has said.

Ed Zander explained during his speech at a US conference that a similar scenario to what happened with the boom in popularity with computers could happen to so-called smart phones.

“We’re making a bet that what happened to PCs will happen to these [smart phones],” said Zander in his speech at Software 2007.

Plans are apparently underfoot by Motorola to help the customer engage more with their smart phone and so interaction between a mobile and a wired device in a user’s home will be explored.

According to silicon.com, one of the ways in which mobile phone operators can diversify is by enabling the user to be able to programme a DVD recorder which is in their home while they are out of the house via their smart phone.

Arguably, the Nokia 9000 paved the way for the raft of smart phones that have since hit the shelves.
