A new digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera from Canon has been put to the test by DP Review this week.

According to the site, the Mark III version of the Canon EOS-1Ds has improved significantly on its predecessor, but has retained a number of its better qualities.

The 21.1-megapixel camera is equipped with the manufacturer’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System as well as a three-inch TFT LCD screen capable of displaying 230,000 pixels and live view technology.

Improvements include the placement of the ISO button placement, a new joystick and a high level of resolution quality.

“The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III is good as it gets and for many users will offer a genuine, viable alternative to a medium format digital system,” the article concludes.

However, it does add that although “essentially, peerless” the camera is “undoubtedly pricey”, which could see some consumers turn to more compact models - such as the ten-megapixel Canon Ixus 970.
