Canon has announced that the number of digital cameras it has now shipped has reached 100 million.

The manufacturer states that of its 106 models currently available - which include the Canon PowerShot A470 and Canon Ixus 870 - it has now reached this milestone and will launch a new model soon to mark the achievement.

It is reported that the new compact digital camera will be a special colour variation on one of its existing models, with the company claiming that it is set for release “in the near future”.

Commenting on the news of its 100 million milestone, Canon’s European head of consumer imaging Mogens Jensen said the firm was “delighted” to have remained a market leader in the sector.

“Canon pledges to continue searching for new technologies, and new designs, that let everyone capture their most precious moments,” he said.

The Canon PowerShot A470 is a 7.1-megapixel model available in a range of colours and the Canon Ixus 870 is an eight-megapixel unit available in black and silver.
