Sales of digital cameras are predicted to rise by eight per cent this year, research undertaken by market intelligence company IDC has shown.

The research estimated that, worldwide, sales will hit 114 million in 2007 and even though mobile phones now incorporate cameras as standard, this should not pose too many problems for the digital camera industry in the short term.

However, 2010 has been earmarked as the year when sales will peak as “complete saturation” will have occurred by then, according to IDC analyst Christopher Chute.

Mr Chute added: “IDC believes that digital cameras will continue to keep ahead of camera phones on the image quality side and still resonate with consumers as the device of choice when taking high-value still images.”

Although 2010 could prove to be the beginning of a relative slowdown in terms of digital camera sales, digital SLR cameras will prove to be the exception to this rule, IDC believes.

In 2011, digital SLR cameras will see a nine per cent increase in sales to 8.5 million.
