Sony could have a surprise in store for fans of its extensive range of digital cameras, if reports are to be believed.

Pocket Lint states that the manufacturer has issued a release suggesting that it is about to make a big announcement that will impact the digital camera market.

The site notes the announcement comes ahead of a planned press conference at the IFA tech show and that August the 14th has been pencilled in as the date that the announcement will be made.

A “teaser invite” sent to the website states: “Sony will soon be making an exciting digital camera announcement,” which it notes could be anything from a new range of compact models to an update to its alpha series.

For those unwilling to wait the manufacturer has a number of digital cameras available that suit various need and budgets, such as the 7.2-megapixel Sony Cybershot W120 and the Sony Cybershot T300.
